Compay (meaning compadre) Segundo, so called because he was always second voice in his musical partnerships, was born in Siboney, Cuba, and moved to Santiago de Cuba at the age of nine. His first engagement was in the Municipal Band of Santiago de Cuba, directed by his teacher, Enrique Bueno.

He became an international music star, playing for sold out audiences in Spain, England and other European countries. He also made music videos, like many of today’s pop stars.

  7. As a true master of words and music, Compay Segundo became a legend in Cuba and was very popular everywhere in the world. With his cigar and his Panama hat on his head, he mastered the armónico, a seven string guitar he had created.
