It is still widely known in Russia as Gorny, or 'Mining', referring to its previous name. During the Soviet period, it was renamed after Georgi Plekhanov, who attended the institute in the 1870s, becoming known as the G. V. Plekhanov Leningrad State Mining Institute and Technical University.
Die Staatliche Universität für Wirtschaft und Finanzen Sankt Petersburg wurde 1930 als Hochschule für Finanzwirtschaft Leningrad (russisch Ленинградский финансово-экономический институт, ЛФЭИ /Leningradski finansovo-ekonomitscheski institut, LFSI) gegründet. Im Kriege wurde der Lehrbetrieb in den Kaukasus evakuiert.
During the Soviet period, it was known as Leningrad State University ( Russian: Ленинградский государственный университет ). It was renamed after Andrei Zhdanov in 1948 and was officially called "Leningrad State University, named after A. A. Zhdanov and decorated with the Order of Lenin and the Order of the Red Banner of Labour ."
