Seine Familie war wohlhabend und er wurde auf Grund des katholischen Glaubens seiner Familie nach dem damaligen Papst Leo XIII (Regierungszeit: 1878 – 1903) auf den Namen Leo getauft. Von 1912 bis 1934 war er auf den Bühnen Londons und dem Broadway zu sehen.
