Nel 1977 Steve Cropper si unì agli Levon Helm & The Rco All-Stars, un gruppo formato Levon Helm, batterista dei The Band. In questa formazione suonarono anche Booker T. Jones e Donald Dunn . Nel 1978 Steve Cropper, insieme a Donald Dunn e al batterista Willie Hall , allievo dello storico Al Jackson Jr., entrò a far parte della Blues Brothers Band di Dan Aykroyd e John Belushi .
Jackson, whom Cropper called "the greatest drummer to ever walk the Earth," was murdered in his Memphis home before the group could make their comeback. In 1978, Cropper and Dunn became members of Levon Helm's RCO All-Stars and then went on to figure prominently in the Blues Brothers Band with drummer Willie Hall.

Levon Helm (26 Mayıs 1940, Arkansas - 19 Nisan 2012, New York), Amerikalı rock müzisyeni, Amerikalı müzik grubu The Band üyesiydi. 1960'ların sonunda zirveye çıkan The Band grubunun kilit üyelerinden Levon Helm; özellikle grubun The Weight ve The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down gibi klasik çalışmalarındaki performansıyla ön plana çıkmıştır.
