Holy Island has a recorded history from the 6th century AD; it was an important centre of Celtic Christianity under Saints Aidan, Cuthbert, Eadfrith, and Eadberht of Lindisfarne.
V. Der Überfall auf das Kloster Lindisfarne. Am frühen Morgen des 8. Juni 793 sahen die Mönche von Lindisfarne mehrere Langschiffe in die Klosterinsel einlaufen. Danach stürmten bis auf die Zähne bewaffnete Krieger den Strand. Sie nahmen keine Rücksicht und richteten ein Massaker an Priestern, Diakonen, Mönchen und Nonnen an.

Irish monks settled here in AD 635 and the monastery became the centre of a major saint’s cult celebrating its bishop, Cuthbert. The masterpiece now known as the Lindisfarne Gospels was created here in the early 8th century.
