The Treaty of Tordesillas was a historic agreement between Spain and Portugal in 1494 that divided the New World into land, resources, and people claimed by each power. It was based on a north-to-south line of demarcation in the Atlantic Ocean, about 100 leagues west of the Cape Verde Islands. The treaty affected the colonization and culture of the Americas for centuries.
Portugal objected, and the Treaty of Tordesillas shifted the line of demarcation more than 800 miles to the west.
