The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts opened in 1996 to forge a new approach to performing arts training. It was co-founded by Lead Patron Sir Paul McCartney and Mark Featherstone-Witty RNOM OBE (LIPA’s Principal), and is housed in his old school, which underwent a multi-million pound renovation to transform it into a state-of-the-art performing arts higher education institution.
Professor Sean McNamara Principal and CEO . Sean joined LIPA in 2021 as Principal and CEO, succeeding co-founder Mark Featherstone-Witty. The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts was co-founded by Sir Paul McCartney and Mark Featherstone-Witty (who helped set up The Brit School) who were introduced to each other by George Martin, a mutual friend. LIPA welcomed its first intake of students in 1996.
