  3. My first thought for 20th century London and working life is of Muriel Spark's novels: The Girls of Slender Means, a Far Cry from Kensington, Loitering with Intent. She has a working class background but mixed in literary, middle-class circles. The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie is not about the literary elites but that's set in Edinburgh.
