In early 1979, Vivier received a joint-commission from the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal (OSM) and the Canada Council for the Arts (CCA), to compose a new work for the orchestra. It was completed in an uncharacteristically short amount of time, with the final manuscript being published on 6 October of the same year.
