12. Juni 2018 · Apart from the title, Mack’s “Memphis” actually borrows little from the original. He converts Berry’s relaxed, proto-reggae groove into a driving, straight-eighth boogie (FIGURE 1 shows similar patterns for G, C and D chords that he arranged in 12-bar form) and folds just a hint of the melody into a big, bluesy chord figure similar to FIGURE 2.
Way back then, in 1964 Lonnie Mack was an amazing singer and guitarist, using a Gibson Flying V plugged into an amp with a rotating Leslie Speaker generally employed by musicians applying their craft to a B3 Hammond Organ. Thus Lonnie could increase his intense and searing tone, like an R'n'B version of Dick Dale.
