Lucien Bonaparte was the third son of Charles Buonaparte and a Jacobin leader who fought for the Republic in the French Revolution. He became Minister of the Interior in 1799, after the coup d'État of 18 Brumaire, and was involved in the plot of the constitutional coup of 18 Brumaire. He was a controversial figure who preferred politics to war and who had a strained relationship with his brother Napoleon.
