März 2024 · Von Luis Alvarez und seinem Sohn, dem Geologen Walter Alvarez, stammt auch die 1980 aufgestellte Theorie, dass ein Meteoriteneinschlag für das Massenaussterben der Dinosaurier verantwortlich sei (siehe auch: KT-Impakt). Dazu maßen sie den weltweit anomal hohen Iridium-Anteil in der Grenzschicht von Kreidezeit zu Tertiär, der nur durch außerirdische Herkunft zu erklären ist.
