Luis W. Alvarez was a professor of physics at the University of California, Berkeley, and a pioneer of high energy physics and cosmic rays. He discovered resonance states within the nucleus of an atom, and developed the Berkeley 40-foot proton linear accelerator and the bubble-chamber technique.
