Iris Luella DeMent (born January 5, 1961) is an American singer-songwriter and musician. DeMent's musical style includes elements of folk , country and gospel . She has been nominated for a Grammy Award twice.
Drawing on the music of Norway and Ireland in addition to American folk and country, The Man From God Knows Where is a song cycle tracing the journeys of Russell's ancestors from Europe to America and the struggles they encountered.
Russell kicks the album off nicely with the title track, sung from the point of view of his namesake who was hanged in 1798 during the United Irish Rebellion. Iris Dement follows with an effective rendition of the standard "Wayfaring Stranger," and a duet with Russell on "Patrick Russell," about another Irish ancestor.
