Marcus Furius Camillus was the most illustrious member of the family of Furia and is known as one of the most outstanding personalities of the early Republic, perhaps even more important than Brutus the Elder or Publius Valerius Publicola, who put the final touches on the new Republican government (successor of Brutus and consul for three times).
Marcus Furius Camillus gehörte einem alten Patriziergeschlecht an, das sich seit dem 5.Jh.v.Chr. politisch hervortat und avancierte zu dessen bedeutendsten Vertreter. Den Konsularfasten nach hiess sein Vater Lucius und sein Grossvater Spurius. In das Licht der politischen Geschichte trat er 403 v.Chr. als Censor in bedrängter Zeit.
