Maria Ewing, who sang notable soprano and mezzo-soprano roles at leading houses, including the Metropolitan Opera, beginning in the mid-1970s, and whose ambiguity about her racial heritage helped drive her daughter, actress and director Rebecca Hall, to make the recent movie “Passing,” died Sunday at her home near Detroit.
