He was the son of John Anderson Truman and Martha Ellen (Young) Truman, and had a brother, Vivian, and sister, Mary Jane. In 1887, the Trumans moved to a farm near Grandview, in 1890, to Independence, and finally, in 1902, to Kansas City.
In 1940, Jackson County foreclosed on a loan to Martha Ellen Truman, and she lost the farm and moved to a house on High Grove Road in Grandview. In 1945, three of Truman's friends bought the farm from Jackson County for $43,000. They sold 87 acres and the farmhouse to J.
