Arden Coat of Arms. Mary Shakespeare (née Arden; c. 1537 — September 1608) was the mother of William Shakespeare. Biography. Mary was born about 1536 in Wilmcote, the daughter of Robert Arden, a gentleman farmer and junior descendant of the Arden family, who were prominent in Warwickshire.

Mary Arden was the youngest daughter of a wealthy farmer and the wife of John Shakespeare, a businessman in Stratford. She had eight children, including William, and may have lived with him at New Place in later life.

Shakespeare’s mother was born Mary Arden in 1537, the youngest of eight daughters of Robert Arden. Mary’s family had a distinguished history and could trace itself back to the Norman Conquest. Thomas Arden had fought in the 13th Century civil war; Robert Arden, the War of the Roses and John Arden was one of Henry VII’s courtiers.

Jahrhundert, deren Leben und Bedeutung erst langsam “wiederentdeckt” wird: Mary Arden, die Mutter von William Shakespeare. Die Quellenlage ist mehr als dürftig.
Mary Arden wurde als jüngste von acht Töchtern Robert Ardens in eine katholische Familie geboren. Nach dem Tod ihres Vaters 1556 erbt sie, mit sechzehn Jahren, Haus und Grund in Wilmcote, Warwickshire (später bekannt als „Mary Arden’s House“, heute „Palmer’s Farm“). Mary Arden heiratete John Shakespeare vermutlich im Jahr 1557.
