She was the daughter of Esmé Stewart, 1st Duke of Lennox and Catherine de Balsac d’Entragues ( d. c .1631) and a favourite of James VI of Scotland. The only surviving legitimate child of James V of Scotland , Mary was six days old when her father died and she inherited the throne.
