Mike Maxfield (23 February 1944 – December 2023) was an English composer, songwriter and guitarist, who came to fame as a member of The Dakotas. Born in Manchester , England, he composed their song " The Cruel Sea ", which was also recorded by The Ventures (see The Ventures discography ).

17. Dez. 2023 · The original guitarist of the Dakotas, who died at 80, is to be remembered by his former bandmate Eddie Mooney with a new single in his memory. The song is based on a demo of a 1964 hit by Dave Berry, which the two had played live with the original artist.
In 1961 the line-up was Mike Maxfield (guitar), Tony Bookbinder (drums), Robin MacDonald (guitar) and Ray Jones (bass). Along with singer Pete Maclaine, they played the club and ballroom venues of northern England. In 1962, at the suggestion of Paul McCartney and John Lennon, Brian Epstein asked The Dakotas to back Billy J Kramer.
