It was formed by merging three existing institutions: the Military University of the Ground Forces Vyškov, Military Academy Brno and the Military Medical Academy Hradec Králové. Thus, only one military higher education institution has remained in the Czech Republic while each of the abolished schools was transformed into a Faculty.
The Military Academy became a part of the newly established University of Defence and thus the core of one of its Faculties, namely the Faculty of Military Technology. The Faculty of Military Technology, still located in Brno, has become an upholder of the fifty-year tradition of higher military education in the centre of southern Moravia.
