The National University of Ireland (NUI) is a federal university comprising the largest element of the Irish university system at the present time.
It was known as "University College, Galway" (UCG) (Irish: Coláiste na hOllscoile, Gaillimh) from 1908 to 1997 and as "National University of Ireland Galway" (NUI Galway) (Irish: Ollscoil na hÉireann Gaillimh; OÉ Gaillimh) from 1997 to 2022. In September 2022, it changed its name to "University of Galway".
National University of Ireland, Galway is consistently ranked in the top 1% of universities in the world, and is especially recognized for engineering, computing and technology. The University’s Engineering school is one of the oldest engineering schools in the world, established in 1849.
