The emperor of Ethiopia ( Ge'ez: ንጉሠ ነገሥት, romanized: nəgusä nägäst, "King of Kings"), also known as the Atse ( Amharic: ዐፄ, "emperor"), was the hereditary ruler of the Ethiopian Empire, from at least the 13th century until the abolition of the monarchy in 1975.

Negus. Tekle Haymanot, negus of Gojjam. Negus ( Ge'ez: ንጉሥ, nəgueś [nɨgueɬ]; cf. Amharic: ነጋሲ negus [negus]) is the word for "king" in the Ethiopian Semitic languages and a title [1] which was usually bestowed upon a regional ruler by the Negusa Nagast, or "king of kings," [2] in pre-1974 Ethiopia .
