The emperor of Ethiopia ( Ge'ez: ንጉሠ ነገሥት, romanized: nəgusä nägäst, "King of Kings"), also known as the Atse ( Amharic: ዐፄ, "emperor"), was the hereditary ruler of the Ethiopian Empire, from at least the 13th century until the abolition of the monarchy in 1975.

Nǝguśä Nägäśt Tewodros zäʾItyop̣ya. Negus ist im Altäthiopischen und Amharischen der Titel für einen königlichen Herrscher. Zu unterscheiden sind einerseits das einfache ንጉሥ nǝguś (‚König‘) und verwandte Bezeichnungen, andererseits die Fügung ንጉሠ ነገሥት nǝguśä nägäśt (‚König der Könige‘).
The full title of the Emperor of Ethiopia was Negusa Nagast and Seyoume Igziabeher (Ge'ez: ሥዩመ እግዚአብሔር; "Elect of God"). The title Moa Anbessa Ze Imnegede Yehuda ("Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah") always preceded the titles of the Emperor.
Negus (Ge'ez: ንጉሥ, nəgueś; cf. Amharic: ነጋሲ negus) is the word for "king" in the Ethiopian Semitic languages and a title which was usually bestowed upon a regional ruler by the Negusa Nagast, or "king of kings," in pre-1974 Ethiopia.
