New College is a place of study all year round. Please therefore do not enter staircases, college rooms, or areas marked as private . The Cloisters, Hall, Chapel and Gardens are fully accessible (access to the hall is via a lift) but please be aware that our grounds have uneven surfaces.
Website. www .ncf .edu. New College of Florida is a public liberal arts college in Sarasota, Florida. The college is a member of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges. In 2023, the state government of Florida overhauled its board of trustees in an attempt to transform the school into a conservative institution.
New College was founded in 1960 as a private college, joined University of South Florida in 1975, then achieved independence as a public university in 2001. New College has remained loyal to its mission and values over the years while adapting to the changing needs of generations of students.
The Foundation. New College was founded in 1379 by William of Wykeham (1324-1404), Bishop of Winchester, as The College of St Mary of Winchester in Oxford. It very soon became known as New College to distinguish it from an earlier Oxford college (Oriel, founded 1326) also dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
