Abel is well known in mathematics for proving the impossibility of solving the quintic equation by radicals. Abel, Niels Henrik. norwegischer Mathematiker, geb. 5.8.1802 Findø (bei Stavanger), gest. 6.4.1829 Froland (bei Arendal). Abel wurde als Sohn eines Pfarrers geboren. Zunächst besuchte er die Kathedralschule in Christiania (heute Oslo). Dort erkannte sein Lehrer Bernt Michael Holmboe sein Talent und förderte ihn.
Niels Henrik Abel war ein norwegischer Mathematiker, der trotz seines kurzen Lebens als einer der bedeutendsten Mathematiker des 19. Jahrhunderts gilt. Nach ihm sind unter anderem die abelschen Gruppen benannt.
Niels Henrik Abel (fødd 5. august 1802 på Finnøy i Ryfylke, død 6. april 1829 på Frolands verk i Aust-Agder) var ein norsk matematikar.. Saman med Sophus Lie blir Abel rekna som den fremste norske matematikaren på 1800-talet, og dei to er òg dei mest respekterte norske matematikarane gjennom alle tider.
