The Northwest Passage (NWP) is the sea lane between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans through the Arctic Ocean, along the northern coast of North America via waterways through the Arctic Archipelago of Canada. The eastern route along the Arctic coasts of Norway and Siberia is accordingly called the Northeast Passage (NEP).

Overview. Europeans searched for 400 years for a passage through North America that would take them to the fabled lands of the Orient. Their searches met with little success. The first man to take a sailing ship from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean through this fabled passage was Roald Amundsen (1872-1928) of Norway in 1903-06.
The Northwest Passage is a sea corridor through Canada's Arctic archipelago and along the northern coast of North America. It has been searched for by European explorers for 300 years, but never found a commercially viable route to the Pacific. Climate change may now be opening the passage to more regular shipping, but its ownership and sovereignty are disputed.
