The Open Air School is a historic building in the Tuttle Park area of Old North Columbus in Columbus, Ohio. The building was constructed as a school, and today houses local a café, bar, a fitness center, and event space. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2019.

23. Jan. 2024 · According to the National Register nomination for the school, the premise of an open-air school was that children’s bodies could be strengthened against tuberculosis by exposing them to abundant fresh air in all seasons and providing ample rest and good nutrition.
Lunch, Brunch, Dinner & Craft Cocktails! Housed within the historic Open Air School and located directly off the Olentangy Trail, Understory is a multi-purpose concept featuring a cocktail bar, restaurant, patio and private event space!
Built in 1928 and designed by Columbus schools architect Howard Dwight Smith, Open Air is an example of an early 20th century effort to provide an educational and healthful setting for the prevention of Tuberculosis in the most vulnerable children of the day.
Open air schools or schools of the woods were purpose-built educational institutions for children, that were designed to prevent and combat the widespread rise of tuberculosis that occurred in the period leading up to the Second World War.
