Otto Dix war ein deutscher Künstler und bekannt für groteske Porträtgemälde. Neben George Grosz und Max Beckmann war Dix Mitglied der Neuen Sachlichkeit, einer führenden Kunstbewegung der Weimarer Republik. Für das denkmalgerecht restaurierte Wohnhaus wurde eine besondere Art der Rekonstruktion entwickelt, die diesen historischen Ort wiederherstellt und zugleich Zeit- und Kunstgeschichte lebendig werden lässt. In jährlich wechselnden Ausstellungen werden Gemälde und Grafiken von Otto Dix präsentiert.
Otto Dix wird in Untermhaus geboren, heute ein Ortsteil von Gera. Sein Zeichenlehrer erkennt früh das künstlerische Talent des Jungen und fördert ihn. Dix erhält eine Ausbildung zum Dekorationsmaler und kann sich dank eines Stipendiums des Fürsten Reuß im Sommer 1910 an der Königlichen Kunstgewerbeschule in Dresden einschreiben.
