It was used as a basis for two films, "The Secret Cave" released in 1953 and a 1985 film "Exploits At West Poley". Plot. Written in the Victorian era, the story is set in the fictional village of West Poley where water from a small river is used to run a watermill, but the miller's apprentice (a child) is badly beaten
This is a children's adventure film. A motherless boy goes to stay with his widowed aunt and older boy cousin in West Poley. The two boys become friends and explore the local caves, finding a secret cave inside a larger one with an underground stream/river.
"Our Exploits at West Poley" was Thomas Hardy's only book for children. Like most of Hardy's work it is set in his native Dorset in the fictitious village of West Poley. It tells the story of how two boys, farmer's son Stephen and his cousin Leonard, discover an underground cave with a fast-flowing stream while out exploring one day.
