Paolo Uccello, pintor, dibujante, mosaiquista y diseñador de vidrieras cuyo verdadero nombre era Paolo di Dono, debe su apodo Uccello —pájaro en italiano—, según Vasari, a su amor por estas aves. Parece que se formó en el taller de Lorenzo Ghiberti, entre 1404 y 1407, y en 1415 ejercía ya como maestro independiente.
