He earned his B.S. in pharmacy from Wayne State University, his M.D. from the University of California, Irvine, and his M.P.H. from the University of California, Los Angeles.

He had been recovering from injuries he sustained months ago when he was accidentally hit by a car while bicycling. According to his obituary published in the Los Angeles Times:
