Strange played guitar on numerous Beach Boys hits, including "Sloop John B" and the Pet Sounds album. He also played guitar for Nancy Sinatra, Jan & Dean, The Ventures, Willie Nelson, The Everly Brothers, Wanda Jackson, Randy Newman, and Nat King Cole, among others.
Dezember 1965 geschah. Da Strange ohne Gitarre anreiste, kaufte ihm Wilson eine elektrische 12-saitige Gitarre mit Verstärker, die er Strange zusammen mit 500 US-Dollar für die Session gab. Bei der LP Pet Sounds ist Strange bei sechs Titeln zu hören; hierfür war er zwischen dem 12. Juli 1965 und 11. Februar 1966 anwesend.
Pet Sounds wurde auch außerhalb der USA über EMI vertrieben und machte die Beach Boys endgültig zu weltweiten Stars. Es gilt heute als eines der bedeutendsten Rockalben. Das Album erreichte Platz 10 der US-Billboard Charts und Platz 2 in den britischen Charts.
