Many of the issues can be organized around the following two questions: Is existence a property of individuals? and Assuming that existence is a property of individuals, are there individuals that lack it?
The main philosophical discipline studying existence is called ontology. According to the orthodox view, existence is a second-order property or a property of properties—to say something exists means at least one thing has these properties. A different view holds existence is a first-order property or a property of individuals.
