20. Sept. 2023 · Yes, Grover Washington Jr. was not only a highly skilled saxophonist but also a talented songwriter and composer. Many of his most popular songs were composed by Washington Jr. himself, reflecting his unique musical vision and creative genius.
The group changed their name to 'Pieces Of A Dream' in 1979, a nod to “Pieces of Dreams,” a Stanley Turrentine tune that the group performed. They were discovered by Grover Washington, Jr. whilst performing as the house band on TV show "City Lights".
Originally somewhat jazz-oriented, Pieces of a Dream have mostly emphasized R&B, although they usually include a few jazz numbers in their performances. Grover Washington, Jr. produced their first three albums (all for Elektra during 1981-1983); they have since recorded for Manhattan and Blue Note.
Grover Washington Jr. (December 12, 1943 – December 17, 1999) was an American jazz-funk and soul-jazz saxophonist and Grammy Award winner. Along with Wes Montgomery and George Benson, he is considered by many to be one of the founders and legends of the smooth jazz genre.
