On his discharge after two years, he picked up where he left off, playing as a sideman with Kenny Dorham, on whose 1958 album This Is the Moment!, he made his recording debut. [5] . He joined the Jazztet led by Benny Golson and Art Farmer and played with them from 1958 to 1961.
(subtitled Kenny Dorham Sings and Plays) is an album by American jazz trumpeter Kenny Dorham featuring performances recorded in 1958 and released on the Riverside label. Dorham sings on the album, for the first and only time in his discography. The album marks the recording debut of pianist Cedar Walton.

Nach Ableistung seines Militärdienstes in Deutschland, wo er mit Leo Wright, Don Ellis und Eddie Harris spielte, wurde er Mitglied der Band von Kenny Dorham. In den späten 1950er Jahren spielte er mit J. J. Johnson, dem Art Farmer / Benny Golson Jazztet und Gigi Gryce. 1959 war er an den Aufnahmen zu John Coltranes Album Giant Steps beteiligt.
