1. Apr. 2013 · 0. Hugh McCracken, a renowned session guitarist and harmonica player, died March 28. He had been battling leukemia. In the mid ’60s, McCracken played in a cover band in New Jersey, followed by a three-year stint in White Elephant Orchestra, an experimental jazz-rock band based in New York City that included Steve Gadd and Tony Levin.
When I entered the “studio musician business” in the late ’60s, Hughie was already there. I can remember, as clearly as if it were yesterday, the first time we played together. I was struck by his warmth, good humor, self-confidence, humility, and by the incredible musical skills he possessed. I mean, the cat could play—and groove!
