Rare Earth ist eine US-amerikanische Rockband aus Detroit. Ursprünglich 1961 gegründet, machte die Band 1967 als The Sunliners die ersten Aufnahmen, änderte jedoch bald den Namen in Rare Earth . Der Name Seltene Erden selbst ist ein Irrtum. Zum Zeitpunkt ihrer Entdeckung im 18. Jahrhundert erwiesen sie sich als Bestandteil komplexer Oxide, die damals als „Erden“ bezeichnet wurden. Außerdem schienen diese Mineralien knapp zu sein, und so wurden diese neu entdeckten Elemente „seltene Erden“ genannt.
