Raymond Henry Williams (31 August 1921 – 26 January 1988) was a Welsh socialist writer, academic, novelist and critic influential within the New Left and in wider culture. His writings on politics, culture, the media and literature contributed to the Marxist critique of culture and the arts.
Raymond Williams (1921-1988) was an author, academic, cultural theorist, and a leading figure of the New Left. He developed a new mode of critical analysis, cultural materialism, based on a concept of culture as dynamic, historical, and democratic. He analysed cultural forms, forces, and tensions, and critiqued the political and economic projects of neoliberalism and socialism.
Zusammenfassung. Über Raymond Williams liegen mittlerweile auch im deutschsprachigen Raum eine Reihe an Betrachtungen vor, die bei seiner Rolle für die Entwicklung der Cultural Studies ansetzen (vgl. Klaus 1983; Göttlich 1996; Winter, R. 2001; Horak 2006, Winter, C. 2007)1.
