Er hat nicht nur seine Opfer brutal ermordet, sondern auch ihr Blut getrunken. Dies brachte ihm den Spitznamen "Der Vampir von Sacramento" ein.
Chase wurde wegen Mordes in sechs Fällen zum Tode auf dem elektrischen Stuhl verurteilt. Am 26.12.1980 wurde er tot in seiner Zelle in San Quentin gefunden. Man hatte ihm täglich Tabletten gegen seine Halluzinationen gegeben, diese hatte er gehortet und dann alle auf einmal eingenommen.
