Career. Carroll was born Ronald Cleghorn in 116 Roslyn Street, Belfast, Northern Ireland, in 1934, the son of a plumber. In January 1954, 19-year-old Ronnie Cleghorn was appearing in a variety show at the Town Hall, Portadown billed as Belfast's Nat King Cole and the show went on to play at several locations in Northern Ireland.
Ronnie Carroll was mainly famous for two things: "blacking up" as a minstrel to impersonate singers of African descent (yes, it really did happen), and representing Great Britain for two consecutive years in the Eurovision Song Contest.
