Safe as Milk is the debut studio album by American music group Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band, released in June 1967 by Buddah Records. A heavily blues -influenced work, the album features a 20-year-old Ry Cooder, who played guitar and wrote some of the arrangements.

20. Nov. 2017 · The lyrics, written by Herb Bermann, are poems placed in Beefheart’s improbable marble mouth and spit out like THC-enriched tobacco juice (which is probably an accurate description of Van Vliet’s saliva at the time). Once heard, Safe As Milk isn’t soon forgotten.
Great and catchy though it is, the record bombed in America and was only a very minor hit for the emerging psych heads in the UK (John Lennon is famously photographed with not one but two of the now famous “Safe As Milk“ bumper stickers in his London flat).
