Sammy first met Sinatra in 1941, when The Will Mastin Trio opened for Tommy Dorsey and His Orchestra in Detroit. Sinatra, then 26, was the lead singer, and he and Sammy, aged 15, hit it off. The two reconnected in 1945 when Sammy showed up at the stage door of Frank’s CBS radio show in Los Angeles.
Von September 1988 bis Mai 1989 ging er mit Sinatra und Liza Minnelli auf eine achtmonatige Welttournee, Frank, Liza & Sammy: The Ultimate Event, die ihn außer durch die USA nach Japan, Australien und Europa führte, letztmals auch nach Deutschland, wo er 1985 mit einem Galakonzert die Spielbank Hohensyburg eröffnet hatte.
