Samuel Andrews was a poor English immigrant who became a pioneer in the oil industry and cofounder of the STANDARD OIL CO. He arrived in Cleveland in 1857 and married Mary Cole, a candlemaker. He worked as an assistant to an oil supplier and established his own production company, Andrews, Clark & Co., in 1863. He sold his interest in the company to Rockefeller in 1874 and used his fortune to support educational institutions and build a mansion.
