  6. Samuel Chapman Armstrong was a Union Army officer, educator and founder of Hampton University, a normal school for black students in Virginia. He served as a colonel in the 8th USCT and a brigadier general of volunteers during the Civil War. He established the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute in 1868 to provide education and training for black teachers and workers. He influenced Booker T. Washington, the leader of Tuskegee University.
