Sawallisch adoptierte den Sohn Mechthilds aus deren erster Ehe, gemeinsame Kinder hatte das Ehepaar nicht. Nach 46 Jahren Ehe starb Mechthild Sawallisch im Jahr 1998, einen Monat vor seinem Tod im Februar 2013 musste er noch den Tod seines Adoptivsohnes erleben.
