According to Wikipedia, the Alien vs. Predator concept originated in a 1989 comic book and the shared universe was teased in Predator 2. Peter Briggs was fairly unknown and sold a spec based on the comic to 20th Century Fox, but he was a working writer for Paramount Pictures in the UK and the idea for a cross over movie was already being floated.
