There are many ways for students to explore their strengths. We have championship teams and we add new teams in non traditional sports annually. We have a daily intramural program so students can use sports for recreation and for competition. We have clubs like debating and model United Nations.
Silverthorn is a semestered school, meaning we run 4 classes for half the year (Sept –Jan) and 4 classes for the second half of the year (Feb –June). The school day starts at 9:00 AM and finishes at 3:15 PM, with the exception of some Wednesday’s when we have a late start from 9:55 – 3:15 PM. Within the day, we run 5 classes every day.
The school was to be named Silverthorn Collegiate Institute after the family who had first settled the area. The cornerstone was laid in 1963 and the school opened in September 1964 with a teaching staff of 24 and a support staff of 7. Murray Young was the first principal.
