One of the most prolific and celebrated composers of film music, Victor Young was born in Chicago, Illinois on August 8, 1900. At the age of 10, Victor moved to Warsaw, Poland to study violin with Isidor Lotto at the Warsaw Conservatory. He debuted as a concert violinist with the Warsaw Philharmonic Concert and toured throughout Europe.
The song is best known today as the centerpiece of the musical film Singin' in the Rain (1952), in which Gene Kelly memorably danced to the song while splashing through puddles during a rainstorm. The song is also performed during the opening credits of the film, and briefly near the end of the film by Debbie Reynolds.

While Lina is "singing" ("Singin' in the Rain Reprise"), Don, Cosmo and R. F. open the curtain, revealing the ruse. The defeated Lina flees in humiliation. Kathy tries to run away as well, but Don proudly announces to the audience that Kathy is "the real star" of the film ("You Are My Lucky Star").
