22. Juli 2022 · Mr. Burke, 76, died of heart failure July 5 at South Suburban Hospital in Hazel Crest, according to his brother, who is a former Midwest regional promotion and marketing manager for Warner Bros. Records. Mr. Burke did keyboards on the soundtrack for “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.”
Burke was the consummate musician, who seemed to excel at any instrument with keys on it. He performed on more than 500 albums for a virtual who’s who of classic soul artists, including The Temptations, Jerry Butler, Johnny Mathis, Tavares, Bobby Womack, The Four Tops, The Pointer Sisters, and countless others.
Biography. Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, composer and arranger Joseph Francis “Sonny” Burke studied piano and violin as a child. He later switched to the vibes, which would become his signature instrument. He began playing in dance bands at an early age, leading his own group at Duke University.
